Commissioner, Alberta and the Northwest Territories
Linda Vennard is a Professor and was a faculty member of the University of Calgary’s Department of Communication and Culture from 2000 to 2015. Her area of specialty is the social context of science and technology, and advanced communication technologies and digitization in particular. Dr. Vennard has taught courses in the areas of research methodologies, mass media and media studies, cultural industries, and public relations. Her research has focused mainly on broadband deployment and community engagement, as well as national security and advanced technologies. She has also conducted research on the ethical and societal impacts of the adoption of science and technology.
In the context of her research, she was Senior Research Associate in the SuperNet Research Alliance (SNRA), a major multi-university collaborative project that studied the uptake and impact of broadband in rural and remote Alberta communities. She sat on the University of Calgary's Conjoint Faculties Research Ethics Board (CFREB) for six years.
Dr. Vennard holds a PhD, a Masters of Arts (MA) and Bachelor of Science (BSc) degrees all from the University of Calgary.
