Public Notice

Ottawa, 30 June 1993
Public Notice CRTC 1993-99
Revised Broadcast Code for Advertising to Children
The Broadcast Code for Advertising to Children (the Code), which is administered by the Canadian Advertising Foundation (CAF), was created by advertisers and broadcasters in 1971. It was last revised in 1987 and approved by the Commission in 1988. Initially, adherence to the Code was voluntary. Since 1974, the Commission has made adherence a condition of licence for originating television stations.
On 16 April 1993 the Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB) submitted for the Commission's approval a revised Code. The Commission has considered the revisions and is satisfied that they respect the central objective of the Code which is to ensure that children are not subjected to inappropriate or misleading advertising, and are not unduly pressured to buy, or have their parents buy, particular products. Accordingly, licensees who are required to adhere to the Code by condition of licence are advised that the revised version of the Code has been accepted and approved by the Commission and will become effective 1 July 1993. Copies of the Code are available at the CAB offices at 306-350 Sparks Street, Ottawa, Ontario K1R 7S8 and through the CRTC, Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0N2 or its regional offices in Halifax, Montréal, Toronto, Winnipeg and Vancouver.
