Public Notice

 Ottawa, 30 July 1996
Public Notice CRTC 1996-73-2
PROPOSED DIRECTION TO THE CRTC RESPECTING THE RESERVATION OF FM BROADCASTING CHANNELS FOR USE BY THE CANADIAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION AND CALLS FOR APPLICATIONS FOR MONTRÉAL AND TORONTO
The Commission announces that it has been advised by the Department of Canadian Heritage that the Governor in Council may direct the Commission, pursuant to paragraph 26(1)b) of the Broadcasting Act, respecting the reservation of FM channels for use by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) at several locations, including Montréal and Toronto. In Public Notices CRTC 1996-74 and 1996-73 (modified by Public Notice CRTC 1996-73-1), the Commission called for applications for broadcasting licences to serve Montréal and Toronto with deadlines for filing applications of 6 August 1996 and 26 September 1996 respectively. In light of the possibility that the Governor in Council could direct the Commission respecting the reservation of channels 236B (Montréal, Quebec) and 256C1 (Toronto, Ontario) for the CBC, the deadlines for filing applications in response to these two Public Notices no longer apply. The Commission will provide further advice with respect to these proceedings at a later date.
The Governor in Council may also direct the Commission respecting the reservation of FM broadcasting channels 292C1(Québec, Quebec), 229B (Chicoutimi, Quebec), 262A (Crystal Beach, Ontario), 206B (Paris, Ontario), 297B (Victoria, British Columbia), 205B (Regina, Saskatchewan) and 222B (Fredericton, New Brunswick).
Allan J. Darling
Secretary General
