Public Notice

Ottawa, 6 September 1996

Public Notice CRTC 1996-73-3 and Public Notice CRTC 1996-74-2

PROPOSED DIRECTION TO THE CRTC RESPECTING THE RESERVATION OF FM BROADCASTING CHANNELS FOR USE BY THE CANADIAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION AND CALLS FOR APPLICATIONS FOR MONTRÉAL AND TORONTO

The Commission announces that it will proceed with its calls for FM applications for the Montréal and Toronto Markets as published in Public Notices CRTC 1996-74 (Montréal) and CRTC 1996-73 (as amended by Public Notice CRTC 1996-73-1) (Toronto). Applications in response to the above-mentioned calls may be filed on or before 7 October 1996 for the Montréal market and 25 October 1996 for the Toronto market. Public Hearing dates for these applications will be announced at a later date.

The Commission has been advised by the Department of Canadian Heritage that the Minister of Canadian Heritage has decided not to seek Governor in Council approval for a proposed direction respecting the reservation of FM channels for use by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) at several locations, including Montréal and Toronto.

The Commission had previously announced on 30 July 1996, that it had been advised by the Department of Canadian Heritage that the Governor in Council may direct the Commission, pursuant to paragraph 26(1)(b) of the Broadcasting Act, respecting the reservation of FM channels for use by the CBC. In light of the possibility that the Governor in Council could direct the Commission respecting the reservation of channels 236B (Montréal, Quebec) and 256C1 (Toronto, Ontario) for the CBC, the Commission stated that the deadlines for filing applications in response to Public Notice CRTC 1996-74 (Montréal) and Public Notice CRTC 1996-73 (as amended by Public Notice CRTC 1996-73-1) (Toronto) no longer applied.
