Decision

Ottawa, 10 September 1998
Decision CRTC 98-429
Durham Radio Inc.
Ajax, Ontario - 199801311
Increase in power for CJKX-FM
1. Following Public Notice CRTC 1998-63 dated 10 July 1998, the Commission approves the application to amend the broadcasting licence for CJKX-FM Ajax by increasing the effective radiated power from 5,110 watts to 15,560 watts.
2. The Commission hereby authorizes the licensee to operate the undertaking on the basis of the contours and particulars resulting from the above-mentioned change.
3. In support of its request, the applicant stated that the power increase is needed to overcome recurring co-channel interference with CFPL-FM London as well as adjacent channel interference with CFJB-FM Barrie, experienced in parts of CJKX-FM's primary service area. The applicant indicated that the power increase will provide a 3mV/m local service signal to an additional 56,000 residents of Bowmanville (Clarington), Port Perry and parts of Pickering which do not currently receive a good signal. In addition, the applicant stated that service will be improved to Ajax, other areas of Pickering, Courtice, Blackstock, Orono and Newcastle where CJKX-FM's signal is presently subject to intermittent co-channel interference.
4. The Department of Industry has advised the Commission that this application is conditionally technically acceptable, and that a Broadcasting Certificate will only be issued once it has been determined that the proposed technical parameters will not create any unacceptable interference with aeronautical NAV/COM services.
5. In accordance with subsection 22(1) of the Broadcasting Act, the Commission will only issue the licence amendment, and the authority will only be granted, at such time as written notification is received from the Department of Industry that its technical requirements have been met, and that a Broadcasting Certificate will be issued.
This decision is to be appended to the licence.
