Decision CRTC 2000-8
Ottawa, 13 January 2000
The Sports Network
Across Canada – 199808284
Application processed by
Public Notice CRTC 1999-68
dated 21 April 1999
TSN repeat channels – denied

1.

In Public Notice CRTC 1999-68, the Commission announced the receipt of an application by The Sports Network (TSN) to amend the broadcasting licence for its national specialty television programming service. TSN sought authority to operate a repeat channel that would rebroadcast TSN programming from the previous seven days, on a separate channel.

2.

In its application, TSN stated that the proposed repeat channel would initially be distributed by Bell Satellite Services Inc. (BSSI), but would not displace any existing programming distributed on BSSI's digital direct-to-home service.

3.

In Public Notice CRTC 2000-6 published today, the Commission sets out a framework for the licensing of new digital Canadian specialty and pay television services. Under that new framework, repeat channels as provided for in Public Notice CRTC 1993-74 will no longer be approved by condition of licence. Those who wish to propose services that will create new viewing opportunities should apply for a Category 1 or Category 2 licence under this licensing framework. Accordingly, the Commission denies this application to amend the licence for The Sports Network specialty television service.

4.

The Commission acknowledges and has considered the interventions received in support of this application.
Secretary General
