Telecom Order CRTC 2002-383

Ottawa, 19 September 2002

Aliant Telecom Inc.

Reference: Tariff notice 35

Market trial for the voice mobility system

1.

The Commission received an application by Aliant Telecom Inc. (Aliant Telecom), dated 24 July 2002, proposing to introduce Voice Mobility System (VMI) on a market trial basis from 23 August 2002 to 23 August 2003.

2.

The applicant noted that the proposed VMI system would allow users to retrieve and manage both voice and fax messages from one mailbox, with one number. The VMI system would also allow end users to centralize messages and provide them with the ability to change call connections and settings based on availability and routine.

3.

Aliant Telecom proposed to make the market trial available in Halifax and Sydney, Nova Scotia and in Saint John, Fredericton and Moncton, New Brunswick.

4.

In Telecom Order CRTC 2002-290, 17 July 2002, the Commission denied the VMI market trial proposed by Aliant Telecom. The Commission found that the scope of the proposed VMI market trial was too broad as the service would have been available throughout Aliant Telecom's operating territory.

5.

The Commission is of the view that the scope of the VMI market trial is still too broad as it proposes to launch the market trial in the major centres of Aliant Telecom's operating territory. Therefore, the Commission denies Aliant Telecom's application.
