CKAL-TV Calgary, CKEM-TV Edmonton, and CHMI-TV Portage La Prairie/Winnipeg -- Acquisition of assets

1.

The Commission approves the application by John D. McKellar, C.M., Q.C., Trustee,on behalf of 1738700 Ontario Inc. (the applicant), a subsidiary owned and controlled by the Trustee, for the issuance of broadcasting licences to continue the operation of the following CHUM Limited (CHUM) Citytv television stations under the same terms and conditions as those in effect under the current licences:
 
  • CKAL-TV Calgary and its transmitter CKAL-TV-1 Lethbridge,
 
  • CKEM-TV Edmonton and its transmitter CKEM-TV-1 Red Deer, Alberta, and
 
  • CHMI-TV Portage La Prairie/Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The Commission notes that this transaction is consistent with CHUM's plan for its divestiture of Citytv stations, as required by Broadcasting Decision 2007-165.

The Commission did not receive any interventions in connection with this application.

4.

Upon surrender of the current licences issued to CHUM, the Commission will issue new licences to the applicant, under the same terms and conditions as those in effect under the current licences. The licences will expire 31 August 2009, the expiry date of the current licences.

In accordance with Public Notice 1992-59, the Commission encourages the applicant to consider employment equity issues in its hiring practices and in all other aspects of its management of human resources.
