Re: Procedural Request – Broadcasting Notice of Consultation CRTC 2013-394

Dear Mr. Lawford,

Commission staff is in receipt of your request for a 15-day extension to file interventions in Broadcasting Notice of Consultation CRTC 2013-394 (Notice of Consultation 2013-394). This request was filed on Public Interest Advocacy Centre’s own behalf and as counsel to the Consumers’ Association of Canada, Council of Senior Citizens’ Organizations of British Columbia, and National Pensioners and Senior Citizens Federation.

In Notice of Consultation 2013-394, the Commission proposed additional safeguards that would ensure greater and more equitable access for new and existing Canadian Category C national news specialty services and indicated that it intended to act swiftly on this matter. As the granting of your request would delay the process, approving such an extension would be contrary to the Commission’s objective of establishing a framework for Canadian national news services in a timely manner. Accordingly, your request will not be granted.

With respect to the scope of the upcoming consultation on television, we are not in a position to provide additional information regarding a process that is not yet underway.

Sincerely,

Bernard Montigny, L.L.B., M.A.
Acting Executive Director, Broadcasting
