Area code relief for area codes 226 and 519 in southwestern Ontario

  1. In Area code relief for area codes 226 and 519 in southwestern Ontario, Telecom Decision CRTC 2013-575, 30 October 2013, the Commission set the relief implementation date for area codes 226 and 519 to 4 June 2015 instead of 4 June 2016 as originally recommended by the CRTC Interconnection Steering Committee (CISC) ad hoc committee for relief planning for those area codes (the relief planning committee [RPC]). This advancement was required as a result of an updated numbering resource utilization forecast that indicated that these area codes would exhaust in September 2015 instead of January 2017.
  2. The latest numbering resource utilization forecast indicates an exhaust date of May 2018. As a result, on 24 April 2014, the RPC requested that the relief implementation date be moved to 4 June 2016. The RPC also provided an updated relief implementation plan.
  3. The Commission considers that delaying the relief implementation date would be consistent with the latest numbering resource utilization forecast, and would be appropriate because it would allow telecommunication service providers (TSPs) to devote time and resources to more immediate projects. Further, deferring the relief implementation date would allow TSPs to introduce the new area code in southwestern Ontario in the same time frame as a new area code in Alberta, which would result in increased efficiencies for the TSPs’ network implementation teams.
  4. Accordingly, the Commission approves the updated relief implementation plan and sets the relief implementation date for area codes 226 and 519 to 4 June 2016.
