Reminder to applicants and licensees of the potential impact of the Let’s Talk TV proceeding

Background

  1. On 24 April 2014, the Commission launched Phase 3 of Let’s Talk TV: A Conversation with Canadians (Let’s Talk TV). In Notice of Hearing, Broadcasting Notice of Consultation CRTC 2014-190, 24 April 2014, the Commission suggested major changes to the broadcasting system based on the input of Canadians received during Phases 1 and 2.
  2. As part of Phase 3, an oral public hearing will begin on 8 September 2014.

Potential impact of the Let’s Talk TV proceeding

  1. The Let’s Talk TV proceeding may result in the adoption of major changes to the broadcasting system which will have an impact on current and future licensees, their conditions of licence and the regulations which govern their activities.
  2. Depending on how the Commission chooses to implement these changes, the impact on licensees may occur during their current licence term rather than at their next licence renewal. In addition, depending on the circumstances, the Commission may consider granting short-term licences to some licensees in order to allow for a more efficient transition towards the revised regulatory framework adopted as a result of the Let’s Talk TV proceeding.
