CRTC to address the telephone number shortage in area code 905

OTTAWA-GATINEAU — The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) today initiated a process to resolve the telephone number shortage affecting the region served by area code 905. Area code 289 will also be affected, as the CRTC added it in 2001 as a relief measure when area code 905 was running out of telephone numbers.

According to the Canadian Numbering Administrator, which consists of representatives from both government and industry, area codes 905 and 289 are expected to run out of telephone numbers by February 2014.

The Commission is establishing a Relief Planning Committee (RPC) to evaluate various relief options and make recommendations to the CRTC. In its planning, the RPC will evaluate relief measures including splitting an area code’s region, adding a new area code to the region, or changing the area code boundaries.

The CRTC will then determine the most appropriate relief plan, taking into consideration the RPC’s recommendations.
