Music Use Study - 2005

Introduction

The following charts illustrate the use and scheduling of various types of recordings by commercial radio stations that program predominantly music and do not operate in the specialty format. Statistics are provided, on an hour-by-hour basis from 6 a.m. to midnight on 17, 18, and 23 April 2005, for the following markets:

  • Calgary
  • Toronto
  • Montreal (French-language stations)
  • Montreal (English-language stations)
  • Quebec City

In addition, combined data are provided for Quebec City and French-language stations in Montreal in order to give a broader picture of the programming of French-language stations.

Factors analysed are as follows:

  1. English-language stations
  • Canadian content recordings
  • Recordings by New Canadian artists
  • Past Canadian Recordings
  1. French-language stations
  • Canadian content recordings
  • French-language selections by Canadian artists
  • English-language selections by Canadian artists
  • French-language selections by new Canadian artists
  • English-language selections by new Canadian artists
  • Past French-language Canadian recordings
  • French-language selections by non-Canadian artists
  • Past English-language Canadian recordings

For purposes of this study, the following definitions were used:

A selection that qualifies under the criteria set out in the Radio Regulations, 1986.

Recording By a New Canadian Artist

A recording by a new Canadian artist fulfills the following two criteria.

  1. the recording was released within 2 years of the date that the programming was broadcast.

  2. the artist had no entries in the Commission's database of Canadian music earlier than 2 years before the programming was broadcast.

The Commission notes that the definition set out above was adopted for purposes of the study in order to give a broad indication of how such selections are programmed.

A Canadian selection that is more than five years old (relative to the time of broadcast).
